Named offshore race approval

Insurers generally want to know which race, over what course, at what time of year. A coastal overnight is a different proposition from a Hobart or a Pacific race, and cover agreed for one does not extend to the other.

Safety categories and crew qualifications

  • The category the race is run under, and full compliance with it
  • Liferaft, EPIRB, storm sails and jackstay requirements
  • Crew qualifications, including sea-safety and first-aid certification
  • Minimum crew numbers and required offshore experience
  • Stability and structural requirements for the category

Event delivery voyages

Getting to the start and home from the finish is not the race, and it is frequently not covered by the racing arrangement. Many offshore campaigns need delivery cover on both ends, sometimes with different crew conditions from the race itself.

Offshore racing exclusions

ItemCommon treatment offshore
SailsExcluded or heavily limited during the race

Prepare your quote properly

Insurers price what they can verify. Work through the vessel-details checklist before you request quotes, so every quote you get is built on the same facts.

Frequently asked questions

Is offshore racing covered by a standard yacht policy?

Rarely. Offshore racing generally requires express agreement, and conditions on safety category, crew and the specific event usually attach.

Is the delivery to and from the race covered?

Not automatically. Deliveries are usually a separate arrangement from the racing cover, sometimes with different crew requirements. Confirm both legs before you commit to the event.
