The calculation method
For each assumed claim, eligible loss is the loss amount less the uninsured portion. The model caps eligible loss at the entered settlement limit, then subtracts the selected excess, with payment never below zero. Your retained loss is loss minus payment. Annual outlay is premium plus retained loss. Different policy wording can apply limits and deductions in another order; confirm the method before using the result.
A total-loss example
For an assumed $120,000 total loss, a $100,000 settlement limit and a $2,000 deductible, this model pays $98,000. Retained loss is $22,000. With a $2,400 annual premium, scenario outlay is $24,400. The $20,000 shortfall is already in retained loss and is not added a second time.
What these scenarios leave out
- Claim probability: results are scenarios, not expected annual costs.
- Future renewal pricing, instalment charges and taxes not already in your premium.
- Salvage, liability, pollution and consequential losses beyond the entered vessel loss.
- Policy-specific depreciation, betterment and exclusions unless you account for them in the inputs.
