State boat registration versus insurance law

Every state and territory except the Northern Territory operates a recreational vessel registration scheme, run by its own authority, with its own thresholds. None of them makes hull insurance compulsory. The single exception anywhere in Australia is Queensland, which requires ships over 15 metres in length overall to carry insurance for pollution clean-up, salvage and wreck removal — a third-party requirement that says nothing about insuring your own vessel.

National insurance requirements

  • The duty to take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation.
  • The General Insurance Code of Practice and the claims handling obligations.
  • Access to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority at no cost to you.
  • Unfair contract terms protections for standard-form consumer contracts.
  • Australian ship registration, which is a Commonwealth scheme separate from state registration.

Local mooring and navigation conditions

Cyclone season and its excesses. Mooring licences and their inspection intervals. Marina cyclone protocols. Haul-out and travel-lift capacity. Theft rates. Distance to the nearest yard that can take your boat. Those are what your quote is actually built from.

Compare on identical facts

Local factors only show up in the price if every insurer is given the same description of where the boat lives and how it is secured. Work through the checklist once and reuse the answers.
