Compare

Boat insurance comparison topics

Use the same vessel value, mooring or storage location, skipper information, cruising area, racing use and claims history for every quote. If one insurer has been given more conservative information than another, the premiums are not directly comparable.

Settlement basis comparisons

Check whether the vessel is insured on an agreed-value, market-value or another stated basis. Then read how partial losses are settled, including depreciation, betterment, obsolete equipment and replacement of matched components.

Navigation and location comparisons

For cruising yachts, the navigation clause can be one of the most valuable parts of the contract. Check named waters, offshore distances, tropical limits, Bass Strait, island passages and any overseas extension. Never assume a phrase such as "Australian coastal waters" has the meaning you expect without reading the definition.

Exclusions and underwriting conditions

Review wear and tear, corrosion, osmosis, mechanical breakdown, unseaworthiness, racing, charter use, theft security, cyclone preparation and survey requirements. An exclusion or endorsement can matter more than a long list of marketing benefits.

Premium and excess comparisons

Add the premium, likely excess, event-specific excesses, sub-limits and risks you remain responsible for. A lower premium can be rational if you deliberately accept more risk, but it should be a conscious decision.

Comparison evidence to retain

Save the quote, PDS, Supplementary PDS, TMD, certificate, endorsements and written answers from the insurer or broker. Product wording can change between policy years.
