International passage documents
For an Australian-owned recreational vessel travelling to a foreign port, check Australian General Shipping Register requirements with AMSA before departure. Also check the entry, customs and insurance requirements of each destination.
Dates and limits in passage approval
A useful approval is specific enough to match the voyage. Keep the insurer or broker email with the certificate and check that it identifies the insured vessel, departure and destination, intended dates or window, maximum offshore distance, crew conditions, additional excess and any safety-equipment requirements. A vague acknowledgement of your plan is not necessarily an extension of cover. The offshore yacht insurance guide explains why this distinction matters.
- Ask whether the extension changes salvage, towing or emergency-assistance limits.
- Confirm whether cover applies while waiting in an intermediate port or sheltering from weather.
- Carry an offline copy of the approval, certificate and emergency contact details aboard.
