Specialist Boat Insurance FAQ: Applications by Vessel Type
Application questions for specialist boat insurance: multihulls, timber, steel, performance and electric boats. Prepare the evidence each vessel may need.

Underwriting appetite is vessel-specific in ways that are not obvious from the outside. Two boats of the same value can be quoted very differently because one is a production monohull and the other is a carbon multihull.
These answers cover what each type needs presented at quote time and where the market narrows.
How do I insure a catamaran in Australia?
Quote it through insurers and brokers who write multihulls regularly, and present the full equipment list. Catamarans carry two of most systems, are constrained by hardstand and travel-lift capacity when they need repair, and are assessed on a different basis from monohulls of the same value.
The recurring practical issues are saildrive servicing across two legs, bridgedeck repair cost, and finding a yard that can lift the beam.
Catamaran insurance covers the underwriting, catamaran insurance cost covers pricing, and catamaran insurance brokers cover the specialist channel.

How do I insure a bluewater cruising yacht?
Present the boat as a cruising platform: the survey, the rig age, the safety equipment, the crew's offshore experience and the intended cruising grounds. Bluewater cover is underwritten on preparation and crew as much as on the hull, and the navigation limits are the central negotiation.
Insurers that write ocean cruising routinely ask different questions from those that write coastal pleasure craft, which is why quoting through the right channel matters more here than almost anywhere else.
Bluewater yacht insurance covers the vessel type, and offshore yacht insurance covers the use.

How do I insure a classic or wooden yacht?
Lead with a current survey from a surveyor experienced in timber, an agreed value supported by that survey, and a documented maintenance history. The market is narrower and slower, and it responds to evidence of how the boat is looked after rather than to its age.
Agreed value matters more here than almost anywhere else, because market value on a restored classic is difficult to establish and easy to argue down after a loss.
Classic yacht insurance and wooden boat insurance cover the market and the survey expectations.

How do I insure a steel or aluminium hull?
Present the survey with particular attention to corrosion — plate thickness readings, the state of the coatings, and any electrolysis history. Metal hulls are readily insurable, and the underwriting question is almost always corrosion management rather than the material itself.
Anodes, shore-power isolation and coating condition are what the survey will focus on, and they are what you should be able to evidence.
Steel yacht insurance covers the type and osmosis and corrosion covers how deterioration is treated.

How do I insure a high-performance or carbon yacht?
Expect individual underwriting and a focus on repair cost rather than purchase price. Carbon structures are expensive and slow to repair, few yards are equipped for it, and insurers price that. Present the build specification, the survey and the intended use — particularly whether the boat races.
Racing use is the variable that most changes the terms, so establish whether racing is covered, excluded, or covered with a sails-and-rigging carve-out.
Carbon fibre yacht insurance and racing yacht insurance cover the two halves of this.

How do I insure an electric or hybrid boat?
Declare the propulsion and battery system in detail: chemistry, capacity, who installed it and to what standard. Insurers are actively developing their position on large lithium installations, and installation standard is the condition that most often attaches.
A retrofit is assessed differently from a factory installation, and the installer's credentials are part of the risk.
Electric boat insurance covers the vessel type and lithium battery cover covers the installation conditions.

How do I insure a trimaran or unusual multihull?
Go to the multihull specialists and present the design, the builder and the survey. Trimarans and small-series multihulls have thin comparable-sales evidence, so the valuation usually has to be reasoned from the survey, and the market that will write them is narrower than for production catamarans.
Berthing is a practical underwriting factor here, because beam determines which marinas and hardstands can take the boat at all.
Trimaran insurance and catamaran insurance cover the multihull market.

How do I insure a houseboat or a boat I live on permanently?
Declare the occupancy and the location precisely, because a permanently occupied vessel is a different risk from a pleasure craft. Expect conditions about the electrical and gas installations, and expect a narrower market than for a weekend boat of the same value.
Some insurers write liveaboard cover with conditions; others decline it outright. Not declaring it creates a misrepresentation problem on top of the coverage question.
Houseboat insurance, liveaboard cover and liveaboard declinatures cover the position.
