Gas, electrical and contents cover

Because a houseboat is occupied and fitted out like a home, its claims look domestic: cooking fires, gas installations, electrical faults, water damage from plumbing, and contents loss. Confirm how the policy treats fixtures, appliances and personal contents, which may be sub-limited well below a household policy's levels.

  • Gas installation certification and its renewal interval
  • Shore-power connection, isolation and RCD protection
  • Fire detection and extinguisher requirements
  • Water and waste plumbing, and damage from internal leaks
  • Contents and appliances, and whether they are covered at all

Inland navigation and moorings

Many Australian houseboats sit on inland waterways rather than the coast, which changes the risk: flood and river-level events rather than swell, and mooring arrangements that may be licensed by a river authority. Confirm the insured waters describe where the vessel actually is.

Prepare your quote properly

Insurers price what they can verify. Work through the vessel-details checklist before you request quotes, so every quote you get is built on the same facts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I live aboard a houseboat and stay insured?

Sometimes, but it must be disclosed and many pleasure craft policies exclude permanent residence. Specialist liveaboard terms are usually the route.

Is a hire-and-drive houseboat covered by a private policy?

No. Any paid hire is commercial use, and a private pleasure craft policy will generally not respond to a loss occurring during it.
