Racing declarations and endorsements
Three quite different positions get confused. A policy may include club racing by default, may include it only with an express endorsement on the certificate, or may exclude racing altogether. The difference is not visible from the marketing page and must be read off the wording.
Sails, spars and rigging cover
Even where racing is covered, the components most likely to break while racing are frequently the ones carved out. Blown sails, bent spars and rig failures during a race are commonly excluded, sub-limited, or subject to their own excess.
| Component | Typical racing treatment |
|---|---|
| Sails | Often excluded while racing, or limited to damage from an insured event |
| Mast and spars | May carry a separate racing excess |
| Standing rigging | Age conditions apply, and racing loads accelerate fatigue |
| Hull | Usually covered; collision with another competitor raises liability questions |
| Crew | Personal accident is generally a separate arrangement |
Offshore race categories and deliveries
- Offshore racing usually requires express agreement rather than a general racing endorsement
- Safety category requirements may be written into the policy conditions
- Crew numbers and experience can be specified for higher categories
- Delivery voyages to and from an event may need separate cover
- Some events fall outside the insured area entirely
Prepare your quote properly
Insurers price what they can verify. Work through the vessel-details checklist before you request quotes, so every quote you get is built on the same facts.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to tell my insurer I race?
Yes. Racing is material to the risk and undeclared racing is a common basis for declining a claim. It also frequently needs an express endorsement rather than being included by default.
Are sails covered while racing?
Often not. Sail, spar and rigging damage during racing is one of the most commonly excluded or separately treated categories in Australian marine policies.
Is offshore racing treated differently from club racing?
Yes. Offshore racing generally needs specific agreement and may carry conditions on category compliance, crew experience and the events covered.
