Cruising equipment and insured value
The single most common under-insurance on a cruising yacht is not the hull. It is everything bolted, lashed and stowed aboard: ground tackle, solar, watermaker, autopilot, satellite communications, dinghy and outboard, tools and spares. Much of it sits under sub-limits set for a boat that goes out on Sundays.
- List every permanently installed item and its replacement cost, not its purchase price.
- Separate the tender and outboard, which are frequently sub-limited on their own.
- Value personal effects realistically — on a cruising boat this is rarely a small number.
- Compare each total against the sub-limit in the wording, not against the sum insured.
- Ask for the sub-limit to be increased in writing where the gap is material.
Extended cruising limits
Cruising plans expand. A boat insured for a state's coastal waters ends up crossing to an island group, running north into the tropics, or taking a weather window that puts it further offshore than intended. The insured area does not expand with the plan, and a diversion outside it can leave you uninsured rather than underinsured.

Comparing cruising yacht policies
| Dimension | What a good answer looks like |
|---|---|
| Insured area | Covers the furthest point of this year's plan, in nautical miles |
| Extension process | A named process, a lead time and a written confirmation |
| Salvage and towing | Adequate for remote anchorages, not just harbour assistance |
| Equipment sub-limits | Checked item by item against what is actually aboard |
| Settlement basis | Agreed value, supported by survey or valuation |
| Lay-up | Genuine, and observed — a nominated period you will actually keep |
Prepare your quote properly
Insurers price what they can verify. Work through the vessel-details checklist before you request quotes, so every quote you get is built on the same facts.
Frequently asked questions
Is a cruising yacht insured for extended trips away from home port?
Only within the insured cruising area. Extended coastal cruising is usually fine; anything approaching an offshore passage generally needs a written extension agreed before departure.
How much should I insure the gear on a cruising yacht for?
Total the replacement cost of everything permanently installed plus the tender, outboard and personal effects, then check each against the policy sub-limits. The gap between those two figures is what you would fund yourself.
