Declaring club and twilight racing

Racing increases both how often damage occurs and how expensive it is. Boats sail closer together, harder, and in conditions they might otherwise avoid. Insurers price that, and a policy that was never told about it may not respond.

Racing inclusion and endorsements

PositionWhat it means
IncludedClub-level racing covered by the wording as standard
EndorsedCovered only because an endorsement was added to the certificate
ExcludedNot covered at all; a loss while racing is not claimable
The marketing page will not tell you which applies. The wording and the certificate will.

Sails, spars and crew exclusions

  • Sails — frequently excluded while racing, or limited to insured-event damage
  • Spars and standing rigging — often subject to a separate racing excess
  • Damage from contact with another competitor, which raises liability questions
  • Spinnaker and downwind sail damage specifically
  • Crew personal accident, which is almost always a separate arrangement

Liability between competitors

Written confirmation of racing cover

Ask your insurer, in writing, three things: whether club racing is covered, whether sails and spars are covered while racing, and whether any additional excess applies. Keep the reply with your policy documents.

Prepare your quote properly

Insurers price what they can verify. Work through the vessel-details checklist before you request quotes, so every quote you get is built on the same facts.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to tell my insurer about twilight racing?

Yes. Club racing is material to the risk regardless of how social it feels, and undeclared racing is a common basis for declining a claim.

Are spinnakers covered while racing?

Often not. Sail damage during racing is one of the most commonly excluded categories, and downwind sails are the most frequently damaged. Confirm the position before the series starts.
