Named owners and operators

A policy in one owner's name may not cover the others as insureds. Establish whether every syndicate member is a named insured, an authorised operator, or neither — because the answer decides who is covered when they are at the helm.

  1. List every member as a named insured or authorised operator, in writing.
  2. Record each member's experience, since operator conditions apply to all of them.
  3. Agree who holds the policy and who is responsible for renewing it.
  4. Agree in the syndicate agreement how the excess is shared.
  5. Agree what happens to the policy when a member exits.

Sharing claim excesses

Syndicate member declarations

Each member's claims history and any previous decline may be material. A syndicate that discloses only the policyholder's history risks a misrepresentation problem affecting everyone's cover, not just the member concerned.

Cost sharing and commercial use

  • Payments between members that exceed genuine cost sharing
  • Time-share or fractional arrangements marketed to the public
  • Members letting their allocated time to outsiders
  • Management by a commercial operator rather than the members

Prepare your quote properly

Insurers price what they can verify. Work through the vessel-details checklist before you request quotes, so every quote you get is built on the same facts.

Frequently asked questions

Does one policy cover every syndicate member?

Only if the policy says so. Members need to be named insureds or authorised operators; otherwise cover may not respond when a member who is neither is at the helm.

Who pays the excess in a syndicate claim?

Whatever the syndicate agreement says. The insurer will look to the policyholder; how that cost is shared internally is a matter for the agreement, which is why it should be written down.
