South Pacific seasonal conditions

Boats leave in the southern autumn, cruise the islands through the dry season, and are expected to be south of the cyclone belt or in an approved location before the season turns. An itinerary that does not resolve that question will struggle to be insured on reasonable terms.

PeriodWhat insurers expect
April–MayPassage north, extension agreed in advance
June–OctoberIsland cruising within the agreed area
November–AprilSouth of the cyclone zone, or in a nominated cyclone hole or haul-out
Indicative of the common pattern. Your own certificate sets the dates and conditions that apply.

Reef grounding and remote salvage

  • Coral groundings are the signature claim of this circuit
  • Salvage from a remote reef is expensive and slow, and sometimes impossible
  • Environmental liability in marine parks can be substantial
  • Local repair capacity is limited outside the main centres
  • Parts must usually be freighted in, extending every repair

Fiji, Vanuatu and New Caledonia preparation

  1. The passage extension, in writing, with dates that allow for weather holds.
  2. Where the boat will be for cyclone season, named and agreed.
  3. Liability limits adequate for marinas and moorings on the route.
  4. Salvage and wreck removal, checked against remote-recovery realities.
  5. Evidence of insurance in a form that reads clearly at clearance.

Prepare your quote properly

Insurers price what they can verify. Work through the vessel-details checklist before you request quotes, so every quote you get is built on the same facts.

Frequently asked questions

Is a passage to Fiji or New Caledonia covered by standard Australian boat insurance?

Almost never. These passages sit well outside a standard coastal insured area and require a written extension agreed before departure.

Where does my boat need to be for cyclone season?

Typically south of the cyclone belt or in a specifically agreed location such as a recognised cyclone hole or a haul-out facility. The requirement is set on your certificate and it is applied strictly.
