When to arrange offshore cover

Offshore placement is a conversation about the boat, the route, the season and the people aboard. It cannot be done in the week before you leave. Give a broker at least a month, and more if the vessel needs a survey or the route crosses a cyclone season.

Vessel, route and crew details

  1. The intended route and departure window, including likely weather holds.
  2. Crew list with sea miles, qualifications and offshore experience.
  3. A current survey, and evidence of any recommendations completed.
  4. Standing-rigging age and service history.
  5. Safety equipment inventory — liferaft, EPIRB, communications, storm sails.
  6. Where the boat will be during cyclone season, if the itinerary crosses one.

Passage extensions and offshore conditions

  • The insured cruising area, written to the route rather than a standard zone
  • Minimum-crew conditions, and whether shorthanded passages are permitted
  • Cyclone-season positioning requirements and the dates they apply
  • Salvage and wreck removal limits, which dominate the worst case offshore
  • What happens if weather forces a diversion outside the agreed area

Take the same facts to every market

A broker can only outperform a direct quote if the vessel information is complete and consistent. The checklist covers everything an Australian marine underwriter will ask.

Frequently asked questions

How far ahead should I arrange offshore cover?

At least a month for a straightforward passage, and considerably longer if a survey is required or the route crosses a cyclone season. Underwriters who write this risk do not work to a same-day timetable.

Will my existing policy cover a passage to New Caledonia or Fiji?

Almost never without an extension. South Pacific passages sit well outside a standard Australian coastal insured area and must be agreed in writing before departure.
