ASIC licence checks

ASIC's professional registers let consumers search AFS licensees and authorised representatives by name, licence number, ABN or ACN. Check that the entity is current and that the name in the quote or FSG matches the entity you searched.

APRA insurer checks

APRA publishes the list of general insurers authorised to conduct new or renewal insurance business in Australia. The consumer-facing brand may differ from the APRA-authorised insurer named in the PDS.

Matching licence details to documents

The FSG should help identify the provider, licensing and remuneration arrangements. The PDS identifies the product issuer and policy terms. Do not rely only on logos or marketing names.

Insurance complaint channels

AFCA can consider many complaints about general insurance and personal or domestic property including boats. The insurer or financial firm should also have an internal dispute-resolution process.

Provider checks to retain

Save the quotation, policy documents, certificate of insurance, emails, broker correspondence and evidence of payment. This is especially useful for unusual endorsements such as offshore passages or racing extensions.

Always read the current policy documents before buying, renewing or changing cover.
