Providers
Alternative provider premiums
Before changing insurer, check whether the premium is being driven by something you can legitimately change: the sum insured, the excess, a lay-up period, the storage arrangement, or an unnecessarily wide cruising area. A different insurer pricing the same risk the same way will often land in a similar place.
Alternatives for wider cruising areas
This is the most common reason a mainstream product stops working for a sailing boat. Mass-market pleasure craft policies are built around coastal use. Specialist yacht underwriters are generally the market for offshore passages, extended cruising and international voyages, and they will usually want to discuss crew experience and vessel preparation rather than simply charge more.
Provider enquiries after a decline
Declines usually come down to hull age, hull material, standing-rigging age, survey status, amateur construction, or a claims history. Approaching a second direct insurer with the same facts often produces the same answer. This is the situation where a broker genuinely changes the outcome, because they can present the risk with context.
| Why the quote did not work | Where to look next |
|---|---|
| Premium higher than expected | Re-check sum insured, excess and lay-up before switching insurer |
| Cruising area too narrow | Specialist sail and yacht underwriters |
| Offshore or international passage planned | Specialist yacht market, arranged with a written extension |
| Older hull or old standing rigging | Broker-placed market that will consider a survey |
| Catamaran or trimaran | Agencies with published multihull appetite |
| Amateur-built or unusual material | Broker, with a current survey in hand |
| Previous claims or a prior decline | Broker who will present the full history with context |
Comparing alternative quotes
The single most common mistake when shopping alternatives is quoting each insurer on slightly different information. Fix the vessel value, hull and rig details, storage location, intended cruising area, usage and claims history first, then require every quote to answer the same question.
Prepare your quote properly
Insurers price what they can verify. Work through the vessel-details checklist before you request quotes, so every quote you get is built on the same facts.
