Rigging, sails and racing questions

  • Standing-rigging age, and whether a re-rig is documented — the most common decline reason
  • Mast, boom and spar replacement cost, which dominates a serious claim
  • Sail inventory value, and whether sails are covered while racing
  • Keel type and grounding exposure in your cruising area
  • Whether you sail shorthanded or single-handed, and on what passages
  • Club or offshore racing, which frequently needs an express endorsement

Broker assistance with sailing conditions

SituationWhat changes with a sail-specialist broker
Rigging beyond an insurer's age thresholdPresents inspection evidence, or finds a market that will consider it
Racing on a cruising policyGets racing endorsed properly, including sails and spars
Shorthanded offshore passageNegotiates crew conditions rather than accepting a blanket restriction
Older production hullPairs the survey with a market that writes hulls of that vintage
Dismasting historyPresents the cause and the repair, rather than letting a form imply a pattern

Take the same facts to every market

A broker can only outperform a direct quote if the vessel information is complete and consistent. The checklist covers everything an Australian marine underwriter will ask.

Frequently asked questions

Is a sailboat harder to insure than a powerboat?

Not harder, but conditioned differently. Rig age, sails, spars and racing all attract terms a powerboat never encounters, and those terms — not the premium — are usually what decides whether a claim is paid.

Will a broker cover my sails while racing?

Sails, spars and rigging during racing are frequently excluded or treated separately. A sail broker should get the position in writing before you enter an event, rather than after.
