Recording the lender's interest
Lenders almost always require their interest to be noted on the policy. That does two things: it entitles them to be paid first from a total-loss settlement, and it usually means they are notified if the policy lapses or is cancelled.
Loan and settlement shortfalls
| Situation | Outcome at total loss |
|---|---|
| Sum insured above loan balance | Lender paid out, surplus to you |
| Sum insured equals balance | Lender paid out, nothing left over |
| Sum insured below balance | Lender paid first; you fund the shortfall |
| Market-value basis, thin market | Settlement uncertain; shortfall risk highest |
Agreed value for financed boats
A market-value settlement introduces uncertainty about the payout figure. Where a loan balance is fixed and the payout is not, an agreed value converts an unknown into a known — which is the whole point when there is debt against the vessel.
Lender insurance requirements
- Comprehensive cover rather than third-party only
- A minimum sum insured, often tied to the loan balance
- The lender noted as an interested party on the certificate
- Notification to the lender of cancellation or non-renewal
- Restrictions on cruising area or use while finance is outstanding
Prepare your quote properly
Insurers price what they can verify. Work through the vessel-details checklist before you request quotes, so every quote you get is built on the same facts.
Frequently asked questions
Does a financier need to be listed on boat insurance?
Lenders almost always require their interest to be noted on the policy, which entitles them to be paid first from a total-loss settlement and to be told if cover lapses.
What happens if the payout is less than my loan?
You remain liable for the shortfall. Matching the sum insured to the outstanding balance, and seeking an agreed value, is how that risk is managed.
