Lithium battery installation risks

A lithium fire behaves unlike a lead-acid failure. Thermal runaway is self-sustaining, hard to extinguish with the equipment carried aboard, and happens in a confined space usually below the waterline with no easy escape. On a boat in a marina berth, a fire that cannot be put out is also a liability exposure reaching the vessels either side.

Insurer requirements for lithium systems

ConditionWhat it means
Qualified installationInstalled by a licensed or accredited marine electrician
Battery management systemA BMS with cell-level protection, not just a charger
Compatible chargingAlternator, charger and solar configured for the chemistry
Installation locationVentilated, accessible, away from fuel and living space
Certification or compliance evidenceDocumentation you can produce
Declaration at inceptionThe system disclosed, not discovered at claim time
Unattended chargingRestrictions, particularly for portable devices

Installation and compliance evidence

  1. Declare the system when you quote, and again if you change it.
  2. Use a qualified marine electrician and keep the invoice and any compliance certificate.
  3. Photograph the installation before it is closed up.
  4. Record the cells, BMS and charging equipment by make, model and serial number.
  5. Do not charge portable lithium devices unattended aboard.
  6. Keep the manufacturer documentation for the bank and the BMS.

Insurance claims after a lithium battery fire

Fire is normally an insured event, so the claim usually turns on the conditions rather than on cover. Expect a forensic investigation focused on what was charging, who installed the system, and whether anything was left running unattended. Answer factually and do not speculate about cause in writing.

Condition is what decides marine claims

Almost every declined marine claim is an argument that a failure was gradual rather than sudden. The records you keep are what answers it.
