Tender and outboard security conditions

Outboard cover is commonly conditional on a specific physical measure: an approved outboard lock, through-bolting above a stated power, or the motor being removed and stowed when the vessel is unattended. Where the named condition was not met, the insurer can decline even though the theft plainly happened — and 'I secured it another way' is not the same answer.

  • A purpose-made outboard clamp lock, fitted and locked whenever unattended.
  • The tender secured to the parent vessel or a fixed structure with a cable or chain, not just a painter.
  • The tender lifted on davits or aboard overnight where the policy requires it.
  • Hull identification number recorded, and the tender registered where applicable.
  • Outboard serial number photographed and stored ashore.

Tender and outboard insured values

Inflatable tubes are treated as having a finite life, so market-value settlement on an older RIB is unkind. A sub-limit set five years ago rarely reflects what a comparable tender and outboard cost today. Count the outboard, check the figure each renewal, and consider specifying both separately if the sub-limit is low.

Condition is what decides marine claims

Almost every declined marine claim is an argument that a failure was gradual rather than sudden. The records you keep are what answers it.

How to make a claim
General information onlyThe information on sailboatinsurance.com.au is general educational information only. It may be wrong, incomplete or out of date, and you should not rely on it as a substitute for the current policy documents or professional advice. It does not take into account your objectives, financial situation or needs and is not personal financial product advice. Insurance cover depends on the actual policy wording, Product Disclosure Statement, certificate of insurance, endorsements, exclusions, limits, sub-limits and underwriting decisions that apply to your vessel. Always read the current policy documents before buying, renewing or changing cover. For legal, financial or insurance advice about your own circumstances, consider speaking with an appropriately licensed professional.
