Australian Ship Registration for Yachts

Check Australian shipping registration requirements before an overseas yacht voyage and keep registration separate from insurance cover.

Regulation

National and local registration differ

AMSA administers the Australian General Shipping Register. Its guidance explains when registration is required, including overseas voyages, and the evidence needed. Australian registration does not necessarily remove state registration requirements. Check both systems for your vessel and intended operation.

Prepare the evidence early

  • Collect ownership history, bills of sale and builder or import records.
  • Check vessel identity and measurement requirements with AMSA.
  • Resolve missing records before planning around a departure date.
  • Confirm destination-country entry documents separately.

Registration does not extend insurance

A registered vessel can still be outside its policy's navigation area. Give the insurer the actual international route, dates and use, and obtain any required endorsement. Keep registration papers and the insurance certificate accessible offline during the trip.

Prepare a passage insurance brief

Record the route and questions for your insurer before departure.
