Regulation
Check three documents before departure
- Policy schedule and endorsements: route, dates, offshore distance and seasonal restrictions.
- Visiting authority guidance: registration, operation and any insurance obligations for your vessel.
- Destination berth agreement: liability limits, certificate and local conditions.
Queensland visits deserve a separate check
A home berth outside Queensland does not remove the MSQ rule when a qualifying ship visits Queensland coastal waters. Check length and vessel category, obtain the required insurance certificate and keep it on board.
If the route changes
Contact the insurer before moving outside the authorised area or dates. Ask for a written extension where required. Keep an offline copy of approvals and the claim contact details; a phone conversation alone can leave the agreed route unclear.
Passage file checklist
- Current schedule, endorsements and certificate.
- Registration and ownership records.
- Destination marina confirmations.
- Weather and safety planning completed separately with appropriate official services.
- Unresolved insurance questions answered before departure.
Build your passage brief
Save the route, dates and insurer questions in one worksheet.
