Domestic Commercial Vessels and Yacht Insurance

Check AMSA classification and insurance arrangements before using a yacht for charter, hire or another commercial activity.

Regulation

Describe the proposed operation

AMSA's domestic commercial vessel framework covers relevant commercial vessel operations and associated safety, certification and crewing requirements. Exemptions and vessel categories matter. Describe the actual activity to AMSA rather than deciding the regime from the boat's appearance or a single payment.

Insurance needs a separate review

Tell the insurer about proposed charter, hire, paid training or other commercial use before it begins. Ask whether the existing policy covers that activity and what changes are required. Insurance-law classification is a separate legal question; do not assume every commercial activity automatically removes every consumer protection.

Questions to resolve before operating

  • What vessel category and operating area apply?
  • Are survey, certificates, safety management and crewing requirements satisfied?
  • Does the insurer expressly accept the proposed activity and operator?
  • What liability, passenger, pollution and wreck-removal cover is required?
  • Do Queensland ship-insurance requirements or local berth conditions apply?

A recreational insurance certificate is not evidence of approval to operate commercially. Record the authority's and insurer's answers with the operating documents.
