Boat Insurance Requirements Finder Australia

Find insurance rules and authority links to check for your vessel, including Queensland's over-15-metre ship insurance threshold.

Find the authorities and documents to check. This finder implements the published Queensland length thresholds; it does not decide whether your vessel complies with every applicable law.

Enter a positive length, e.g. 15.01. MSQ excludes specified appendages from its length definition.

Requirements to investigate

Queensland's over-15-metre rule has not been assessed because Queensland waters were not selected. This does not mean insurance is unnecessary elsewhere.

Check storage, launching, club and event conditions for any separate insurance requirements.

For commercial, hire, charter or mixed use, confirm vessel classification with AMSA and disclose the activity to the insurer. Recreational cover should not be assumed to apply.

What this tool does not decide
It does not assess exemptions, exact vessel classification, international requirements, seaworthiness, licence conditions or whether a specific policy complies. Visiting vessels can be affected by Queensland’s rule. A registration certificate is not proof of insurance.

Inputs stay in this browser. Saving is optional; avoid saving on a shared device.

What the finder checks

The finder combines your selected jurisdiction, vessel use, length and Queensland travel plans with published MSQ thresholds. It also points you to local boating authorities and berth conditions. It is a starting checklist, not a comprehensive legal assessment or certificate of compliance.

The important Queensland boundary

The MSQ rule applies to ships over 15 metres, including visiting ships in Queensland coastal waters. Exactly 15 metres is not over the threshold. Vessels 35 metres or longer fall into a different limit category. Check MSQ's measurement definition and ask the authority about uncertain classification or exemptions.

These tools run on your device. Use Save on this device to keep a draft in this browser; saving is optional. Reset removes the saved draft. Download creates a text summary, and Print / save PDF opens your browser's print options. A saved worksheet is not an insurance application or confirmation of cover.
