Regulation

Which vessels meet the length threshold?

MSQ's published rule applies to ships over 15 metres. Exactly 15 metres is outside this length threshold; 15.01 metres is over it. Use MSQ's hull-length definition, which excludes specified appendages, rather than a marketing model length.

Published insurance limits

Ship categoryPublished minimum
Recreational: over 15m, under 35m$250,000 pollution; $10 million salvage and wreck removal
Commercial or other Queensland-regulated ship: over 15m, under 35m$500,000 pollution; $10 million salvage and wreck removal
35m or longer$10 million cover for pollution, salvage and wreck removal

Certificate and voyage checks

  • The rule also affects visiting ships in Queensland coastal waters.
  • Confirm the policy and current certificate show the required cover.
  • Keep the current insurance certificate on board.
  • Ask MSQ directly about classification or a possible exemption; do not assume one applies.

What this rule does not establish

Meeting these limits does not establish comprehensive hull cover or satisfaction of every marina agreement, operating rule or policy condition. A vessel below this threshold can still have other insurance obligations. Confirm your precise situation with MSQ and the insurer.
