Send the event conditions, not only its name
An event described as a rally can still have features an insurer needs to assess. Provide the organiser's rules, route and activities and ask whether any racing or organised-event provision applies. Do not decide that question solely from whether participants call it competitive. The insurer should be able to see what the boat will actually do before confirming the terms.
Obtain navigation and operator decisions separately
Record departure, stopovers, destination, offshore legs and realistic dates. Include the skipper and crew information requested, with any single-handed sections clearly described. An event acceptance does not necessarily extend the navigation area, and an offshore extension does not automatically approve every operator or race. Keep each written decision with the schedule and relevant endorsements.
Plan for changes without assuming automatic extensions
Ask how to handle weather delays, diversions, crew substitutions and withdrawal from the event. If dates or routes change, contact the insurer before relying on the original approval. Safety decisions should follow the appropriate professional and official guidance. An insurance checklist cannot decide whether departure is safe or whether a route should be attempted.
Documents and questions to prepare
- Event rules and proposed activities.
- Complete route, stopovers and date window.
- Skipper, crew and any single-handed arrangements.
- Written process for delays, diversions and changed participation.
Worked ownership scenario
A cruising rally changes its departure window after an owner obtains a navigation extension. The owner asks for confirmation covering the revised dates and checks whether the event terms have changed. Remaining registered for the rally is not treated as automatic extension of the insurance schedule.
Turn the guide into a written insurance brief
Keep the relevant photographs, invoices, reports and correspondence together. Separate facts you can document from questions that remain unresolved. When requesting a decision, identify the vessel, the intended activity and the exact policy term you need clarified. Record who replied, when the response applies and whether an endorsement is required; a general brochure statement may not answer the specific question.
Record the policy wording and unanswered questions
Use the comparison worksheet to keep each requirement beside its document reference. Leave an item unresolved until the insurer has answered it.
Frequently asked questions
Is every rally treated as racing for insurance?
There is no universal answer here. Send the actual event conditions and ask how the policy applies. The event name alone is insufficient.
Does a rally organiser's safety checklist confirm my insurance?
No. Event participation requirements and your individual insurance contract are different checks. Obtain the insurer's own written acceptance where required.
Sources and scope
Manufacturer links support identification and design context. Australian insurer document libraries are starting points for checking policy wording, not evidence of acceptance of this boat or activity. The checklists and examples are editorial guidance. Use the PDS version, schedule and endorsements that apply to your own policy; this guide does not rank insurers or provide an individual insurance recommendation.
