Identify the generation and fitted specification

Outremer's model and brokerage information spans several designs and generations. A name such as 45 should be accompanied by year, hull identification and the correct documentation. Record the actual rig, appendages and fitted systems. Avoid inferring the construction or inventory of an older boat from a current range page; a survey and installation file should describe the vessel being insured.

Separate performance equipment from racing use

A performance-oriented design is not the same thing as participation in an insured race. Describe the activities planned, including organised events, rallies and any timed competition. Ask how sails, spars, rigging and specialist appendages are treated. Do not rely on the words cruising or rally alone when the insurer needs the event rules to decide whether an extension is necessary.

Plan a repair away from the home yard

For a long-distance itinerary, discuss inspection, access to a suitable yard, specialist materials and the movement of parts or technicians. Ask whether associated costs are within the damage settlement, separately limited or outside cover. These questions do not presume a defect or unusually expensive claims; they clarify how an accepted repair would be organised at the places you intend to visit.

Treat the route as a dated request

Provide departure, destination, stopovers and seasonal plans. Record any single-handed legs or changes of skipper. A vessel's advertised offshore capability does not change policy navigation limits. Keep extension dates aligned with the real itinerary and ask what happens if repairs or weather delay departure. If Queensland is included, check the measured length and applicable requirements separately.

Documents and questions to prepare

  • Model generation, year and hull-specific technical documents.
  • Rig, sail and appendage inventory with inspection evidence.
  • Event rules for any rally or race proposed.
  • Named passage, crew arrangements and realistic date window.
  • Repair access, freight, salvage and policy limit questions.

Worked ownership scenario

An Outremer owner joins a cruising rally whose route includes waters outside the existing schedule. The owner sends the itinerary and event conditions to the insurer and requests the relevant extension. Acceptance of the boat for ordinary cruising is not treated as automatic approval of the rally or its entire route.

Turn the guide into a written insurance brief

Record the hull identification number, build year, exact version, propulsion, equipment and any previous repairs before requesting terms. Keep the purchase price distinct from the requested insured value and explain the evidence for that value. Send each insurer the same current facts. If a survey or repair is still pending, ask what cover can begin now, what is excluded and what evidence is needed to change the terms.

Record the policy wording and unanswered questions

Use the comparison worksheet to keep each requirement beside its document reference. Leave an item unresolved until the insurer has answered it.

Frequently asked questions

Does an offshore design automatically qualify for worldwide insurance?

No. Eligibility and cruising limits are decided under the individual policy. Request the actual geographic area and conditions in writing.

Should daggerboards be listed separately?

Identify them and ask how they fall within insured property, limits and exclusions. Separate identification helps clarity but does not itself create a separate insured amount.

Sources and scope

Manufacturer links support identification and design context. Australian insurer document libraries are starting points for checking policy wording, not evidence of acceptance of this boat or activity. The checklists and examples are editorial guidance. Use the PDS version, schedule and endorsements that apply to your own policy; this guide does not rank insurers or provide an individual insurance recommendation.
