Insurance when a friend operates your yacht
A competent friend offers to move the boat while you are overseas. They have sailed with you often but are not a named operator. Give the insurer their relevant experience and the proposed trip rather than assuming that familiarity with the boat is sufficient.
Temporary skipper experience records
- Proposed skipper’s relevant vessel and route experience
- Any licence or qualification required for the activity
- Dates, route and whether the owner will be aboard
- Whether any payment or other arrangement is involved
Keep the original documents as well as a readable summary. Use filenames that identify the vessel, date and subject so another owner, skipper or assessor can follow the record. Store an offline copy of the current certificate and emergency contact details for use when connectivity is poor.
Confirming permission for another skipper
Start with the related detailed guide, then describe your actual scenario to the insurer or broker. Ask them to identify the applicable wording and any action required before you proceed. Keep the question and response together; a general product brochure cannot resolve a vessel-specific condition.
Frequently asked questions
Does paying a friend change the position?
It is a fact to disclose and clarify, not a shortcut to a particular answer. Paid delivery, private borrowing and charter can be treated differently. Explain the arrangement accurately and request confirmation of both operator acceptance and permitted use.
Which documents should I read together?
Read the current Product Disclosure Statement with the policy schedule, certificate and any endorsements. Check that you have the version applying to your cover period. Your own document set is the starting point for a specific coverage question; this guide supplies a preparation method rather than a promise of cover.
