Frequently asked questions

What if settlement is delayed?

Tell the insurer before the scheduled start where possible. Ask whether the inception date can be amended and obtain a revised certificate. Do not cancel existing cover on a boat you still own simply because a planned sale date has arrived.

Does paying the renewal confirm every change?

Payment alone does not explain a change to your risk or prove an endorsement was added. Check the new schedule and ask the insurer to identify where the agreed amendment appears. Keep the response with the renewal documents.

Is a short test sail different from normal sailing?

It may still be use outside the agreed lay-up terms. Describe the commissioning trip, who will be aboard and where it will take place. Ask whether approval is needed even when the trip is only to test equipment.

Can more than one excess apply to the same incident?

That depends on the wording governing multiple excesses. Ask which excesses would apply to the specific scenario and whether they are cumulative or whether only one is deducted. A sample calculation should identify the clauses used.

Does listing the tender remove theft conditions?

No assumption should be made from the equipment list alone. Read the theft, security, unattended property and territorial wording. Ask how those terms apply to the way you actually use the tender, including leaving it away from the yacht.

Does paying a friend change the position?

It is a fact to disclose and clarify, not a shortcut to a particular answer. Paid delivery, private borrowing and charter can be treated differently. Explain the arrangement accurately and request confirmation of both operator acceptance and permitted use.

Should I assume the contractor pays for any damage?

Do not assume liability or coverage from the presence of a contractor. The cause, contract and insurance arrangements need to be assessed. If damage occurs, notify your insurer promptly and preserve the work records without agreeing a final settlement prematurely.

Will a new sail always be replaced new for old?

The settlement basis and any sail-specific provisions decide that question. Check whether age, wear, depreciation or a sub-limit affects payment, and whether racing changes the terms. A receipt establishes purchase details; it does not override those clauses.

Does a marina’s insurance requirement prove my cover is adequate?

It only establishes the evidence the marina asks you to provide. Read your own vessel cover separately, including exclusions, navigation limits and excesses. Ask the marina which contractual requirements apply and the insurer whether your certificate meets them.

Can I discard the failed part after replacement?

Ask the insurer or assessor before disposing of evidence where it is safe to retain it. A damaged component may help establish cause. If keeping it would be unsafe, record that fact and photograph or document it as practicable.

Does an invoice guarantee reimbursement of that amount?

An invoice is evidence, not a settlement promise. The policy may apply an overall sum insured, equipment sub-limit, depreciation or another valuation rule. Ask how the proposed equipment would be treated in a partial loss and a total loss.

Can I assume a weather delay automatically extends cover?

Read the approval and ask rather than assume. Some wordings address deviations or delays, but the details and notification requirements matter. Record the insurer’s response alongside the original approval so the current position is clear.

Can one owner change cover for everybody?

Check the authority agreed within the ownership arrangement and with the insurer. Nominate a contact and require changes to be circulated, while ensuring urgent incidents can still be reported promptly. Internal rules do not alter policy terms by themselves.

Does sending repair photos mean a condition is removed?

Not necessarily. Ask whether the insurer accepts the evidence and whether the schedule or endorsement needs amendment. A sent email records notification, while a response can establish whether further evidence is required.

Should I state who was at fault?

Describe the facts you know and label opinions or information from others. Avoid agreeing liability or a settlement without speaking to the insurer. Legal responsibility and policy cover need assessment rather than a confident guess in the first notification.
