Insurance gaps at yacht handover

The contract settles on Friday, but the delivery skipper leaves on Thursday. A start date matching settlement does not answer who carries the risk on the earlier delivery. Give the insurer the actual sequence, including the sea trial, payment, keys and departure.

Handover dates and vessel records

  • Signed sale agreement and the agreed transfer time
  • Insured name, vessel identification and purchase price
  • The route and dates for moving the boat after handover
  • Survey recommendations and outstanding work

Keep the original documents as well as a readable summary. Use filenames that identify the vessel, date and subject so another owner, skipper or assessor can follow the record. Store an offline copy of the current certificate and emergency contact details for use when connectivity is poor.

Confirming the policy start time

Start with the related detailed guide, then describe your actual scenario to the insurer or broker. Ask them to identify the applicable wording and any action required before you proceed. Keep the question and response together; a general product brochure cannot resolve a vessel-specific condition.

Frequently asked questions

What if settlement is delayed?

Tell the insurer before the scheduled start where possible. Ask whether the inception date can be amended and obtain a revised certificate. Do not cancel existing cover on a boat you still own simply because a planned sale date has arrived.

Which documents should I read together?

Read the current Product Disclosure Statement with the policy schedule, certificate and any endorsements. Check that you have the version applying to your cover period. Your own document set is the starting point for a specific coverage question; this guide supplies a preparation method rather than a promise of cover.
