Build the proposal from the individual boat

Balance's manufacturer resources describe its performance sailing range. An insurance proposal should go further by identifying the exact model, hull number, build year and delivered equipment. Record options and later changes with their supporting documents. Brand familiarity does not tell an underwriter whether a particular boat has a different rig, propulsion arrangement or energy installation.

Prepare for the transition from build to ownership

A new purchase may involve commissioning, acceptance, storage and a delivery passage before reaching the owner's home berth. Record the point at which the buyer takes responsibility under the purchase arrangements and ask when insurance begins. Clarify which operations are covered during commissioning and whether a delivery skipper or route needs separate approval. Do not assume the seller's or yard's cover continues for the buyer.

Document offshore plans as individual passages

Provide the proposed itinerary and dates, crew experience and any single-handed sections. A broad intention to cruise internationally leaves important questions unanswered. Ask about seasonal restrictions, extensions, delayed departures and emergency contacts. Keep the written navigation decision available offline with the schedule. The design's offshore marketing description cannot extend an insurance boundary.

Agree how equipment and repairs will be assessed

Identify sails, rig, appendages, electronics and energy systems in a consistent inventory. For an accepted claim, ask how repair scopes are approved and how parts, freight and specialist labour are treated. Distinguish the total insured value from partial-loss deductions. These questions are useful for a customised boat because the correct replacement specification may not be obvious from a model name.

Documents and questions to prepare

  • Exact delivered configuration and change records.
  • Purchase-risk transfer, commissioning and cover commencement dates.
  • Delivery skipper and passage approval where needed.
  • Equipment identifiers, sail inventory and supporting valuations.
  • Repair approval, depreciation and recovery provisions in writing.

Worked ownership scenario

A Balance buyer plans to take delivery abroad and sail home later in the year. The buyer separates commissioning, a temporary berth and the offshore delivery into stages when requesting cover. A policy starting at the Australian destination would leave the earlier stages unanswered, even if the eventual home location is accepted.

Turn the guide into a written insurance brief

Record the hull identification number, build year, exact version, propulsion, equipment and any previous repairs before requesting terms. Keep the purchase price distinct from the requested insured value and explain the evidence for that value. Send each insurer the same current facts. If a survey or repair is still pending, ask what cover can begin now, what is excluded and what evidence is needed to change the terms.

Record the policy wording and unanswered questions

Use the comparison worksheet to keep each requirement beside its document reference. Leave an item unresolved until the insurer has answered it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I arrange cover before final commissioning?

Ask the insurer to specify what evidence and conditions are required and what operations the proposed cover includes. Do not infer that a quotation is already effective insurance.

Does an experienced delivery skipper guarantee acceptance?

No. Supply the experience information requested, but obtain a decision covering the boat, operator, route and dates. Each part can require separate confirmation.

Sources and scope

Manufacturer links support identification and design context. Australian insurer document libraries are starting points for checking policy wording, not evidence of acceptance of this boat or activity. The checklists and examples are editorial guidance. Use the PDS version, schedule and endorsements that apply to your own policy; this guide does not rank insurers or provide an individual insurance recommendation.
