Guides
Map the purchase into dated stages
Write down where the boat is located, when risk passes under the purchase arrangements and what happens next. Storage, repairs, commissioning, crew arrival and departure can create distinct stages. Ask for insurance terms covering the periods for which you are responsible. Do not assume a quote based on an Australian home berth includes months spent elsewhere before arrival.
Distinguish sailing delivery from transport as cargo
Describe whether the boat will travel under its own power or be carried by another vessel. These are different operations and should not be left ambiguous. Obtain the relevant contracts and ask the insurer about loading, transport, unloading and any storage where applicable. Registration, import requirements and delivery logistics need their own professional or authority checks.
Reconcile currency, inventory and route
Explain the valuation evidence, currency and equipment included in the sale. Ask how the requested insured amount is agreed rather than copying a foreign listing price into an Australian-dollar field. Provide route, dates and operator details for a sailing delivery and obtain written navigation acceptance. Keep changes caused by delays visible in the insurance correspondence.
Documents and questions to prepare
- Purchase arrangements and exact risk-transfer timing.
- Locations and activities before Australian arrival.
- Sailing or cargo-transport contracts and route details.
- Currency, valuation evidence and final inventory.
Worked ownership scenario
A buyer completes a catamaran purchase overseas but cannot depart for several months. The enquiry separately describes the storage period and eventual sailing delivery. A policy quoted only for the final Australian marina is not treated as an answer to those earlier periods.
Turn the guide into a written insurance brief
Keep the relevant photographs, invoices, reports and correspondence together. Separate facts you can document from questions that remain unresolved. When requesting a decision, identify the vessel, the intended activity and the exact policy term you need clarified. Record who replied, when the response applies and whether an endorsement is required; a general brochure statement may not answer the specific question.
Record the policy wording and unanswered questions
Use the comparison worksheet to keep each requirement beside its document reference. Leave an item unresolved until the insurer has answered it.
Frequently asked questions
Does an Australian policy automatically start when I pay an overseas seller?
No. Confirm commencement, geographic scope and conditions in writing. Payment, contractual risk transfer and insurance commencement may be different events.
Can this guide decide import taxes or registration requirements?
No. Those require separate current authority guidance and advice for the transaction. This guide organises the insurance questions around the purchase and movement of the boat.
Sources and scope
Manufacturer links support identification and design context. Australian insurer document libraries are starting points for checking policy wording, not evidence of acceptance of this boat or activity. The checklists and examples are editorial guidance. Use the PDS version, schedule and endorsements that apply to your own policy; this guide does not rank insurers or provide an individual insurance recommendation.
