Jeanneau construction and underwriting

A significant number of production cruising yachts in this class entered the market through charter fleets, in Australia or overseas. Charter provenance is not a barrier to cover, but it changes the questions — hours, maintenance regime, and whether the boat was surveyed on exiting the fleet.

Charter history and Sun Fast racing

  • Whether the boat has charter history, and where that charter operated
  • Engine hours relative to age, which often reveals fleet use
  • Standing-rigging age and service history
  • Whether the boat is a Sun Odyssey cruiser or a Sun Fast performance model
  • Condition of deck hardware and steering systems after high-use years
  • Current survey status and any outstanding recommendations

Jeanneau policy conditions

  • How the settlement basis is defined, given charter boats can value differently
  • Whether any residual commercial or charter use is contemplated — most private policies exclude it
  • Sail and spar cover if the performance model will be raced
  • Insured cruising area and offshore extension process
  • Machinery and saildrive treatment given higher engine hours

Documents for a Jeanneau insurance quote

Give every insurer the same vessel facts: year, model, length, hull material, rig, engine hours, standing-rigging age, survey date, storage arrangement and intended cruising area. Differences between quotes are only meaningful when the inputs are identical.

Frequently asked questions

Does a charter history make a yacht harder to insure?

Not usually, but it must be disclosed. Insurers price for use, and a boat with fleet hours behind it is a different risk from a lightly used private yacht of the same year. Non-disclosure is the real problem, not the history.

Can I insure a former charter yacht for private use?

Yes, provided the boat is now genuinely in private use and that is what the policy records. If any paid charter continues, a private pleasure craft policy will generally not respond.

Prepare your quote properly

Insurers price what they can verify. Work through the vessel-details checklist before you request quotes, so every quote you get is built on the same facts.
