The charterer taking a boatThe damage deposit, what waives it, and your personal liability

Charter management agreements

  • Whether the operator's policy covers the vessel, and to what extent
  • Who is liable during changeover, cleaning and maintenance periods
  • What happens when the boat is used by the operator between charters
  • How damage is assessed and charged back to charterers
  • Whether you may use the boat yourself, and under which policy
  • What cover applies during the off-season and any lay-up

Deposits and damage waivers

Bareboat grounding claims

Unfamiliar boats in unfamiliar waters produce groundings, and they are the most common serious charter claim in Australia's cruising grounds. They are also among the most likely to fall outside a damage waiver, which makes them a personal liability question for the charterer.

Former charter vessel cover

When a boat leaves a charter fleet its history follows it. Hours, maintenance regime and whether it was surveyed on exit all become material facts for the next owner's insurer — and they must be disclosed.

Prepare your quote properly

Insurers price what they can verify. Work through the vessel-details checklist before you request quotes, so every quote you get is built on the same facts.

Frequently asked questions

Is my boat covered if I put it into bareboat charter?

Not under a private policy. Charter is commercial use and requires commercial cover, usually arranged alongside the management agreement with the operator.

What does a charter damage waiver actually cover?

It generally caps what the operator charges you, subject to exclusions. Groundings, tender and outboard loss and negligence are commonly excluded, so the waiver is not a substitute for understanding your liability.

Insurance cover depends on the actual policy wording, Product Disclosure Statement, certificate of insurance, endorsements, exclusions, limits, sub-limits and underwriting decisions that apply to your vessel. Always read the current policy documents before buying, renewing or changing cover.
