Cradle support and stability

A vessel ashore is only as secure as what holds it up. Cradle adequacy, correct load distribution and — in exposed locations — tie-down are the factors that decide whether a boat rides out a blow or goes over, frequently taking neighbours with it.

ArrangementWhat to confirm
Yard-supplied cradleWhether it is rated for your displacement and hull form
Owner's cradleEngineering adequacy, and whether the insurer accepts it
Boat standsNumber, placement, chaining together, ground conditions
Tie-downRequired in cyclone areas; check anchor points and straps
Ground surfaceSealed hardstand versus gravel or dirt in wet conditions

Neighbouring-vessel damage

Cover during storage and refit

  • Some policies restrict cover while the vessel is out of commission or dismantled
  • Lay-up terms may apply, changing what is covered during the period
  • Work being carried out aboard can affect cover, particularly hot work
  • Theft exposure changes — boats ashore are often easier to access
  • Confirm cover applies during lifting, which is a high-risk moment

Lifting and launching cover

Travel-lift operations are where a meaningful share of hardstand claims occur. Establish whether damage during lifting is covered by your policy, by the yard's, or falls between the two — the answer is often in the yard's terms rather than yours.

Prepare your quote properly

Insurers price what they can verify. Work through the vessel-details checklist before you request quotes, so every quote you get is built on the same facts.

Frequently asked questions

Is my boat insured while stored on hardstand?

Usually, but sometimes on modified terms, and cover can be affected if the vessel is dismantled or work is being carried out. Confirm the position for the period it will be ashore.

Who is liable if my boat falls over on hardstand?

Generally you are, including for damage to other vessels, which is why cradle and stand adequacy matters. Yard terms may also allocate responsibility, so read them alongside your policy.
