Boat liability limits and insured events

  • Third-party property damage
  • Bodily injury liability where covered
  • Legal defence costs
  • Marina-related liability where the wording responds
  • Pollution, salvage or wreck-removal liability where included

Pollution and contractual liability exclusions

  • Contractual liability can differ from ordinary negligence
  • Liability limits should be assessed against realistic marina and vessel values
  • Crew, guests and watersports can be treated differently
  • International liability requirements can differ
  • Queensland vessels over 15m need to meet specific statutory insurance limits

Assessing third-party liability exposure

Request quotes using the same vessel value, storage location, cruising area and usage assumptions. If one quote is materially cheaper, identify the policy feature creating the difference before assuming it is better value. Save the PDS and certificate that apply to the quote.

Frequently asked questions

How much boat liability cover do I need?

There is no single figure suitable for every owner. Consider the value of nearby vessels and marina infrastructure, pollution exposure, wreck removal and any minimum required by a marina, financier or law.

Where should I look in the policy?

Start with the cover section, exclusions, definitions, excesses, navigation limits, claim settlement provisions and any endorsements on the certificate of insurance.

Comparing boat liability limits and contracts

A marina may require evidence of liability cover before allocating a berth. Compare that contractual requirement with the actual policy: the insured person, vessel, location, activities and limit must match. A certificate meeting a marina minimum does not show whether every indemnity in the berth agreement is insured.

Ask separately about damage to other vessels, injury, pollution and wreck removal. Record whether costs share one limit or have separate sub-limits, and how defence expenses are treated. Use the policy wording and written clarification for any term you cannot reconcile.

Use the policy comparison checklist to record the terms, then prepare consistent vessel details with the interactive quote checklist.
