The insurance decision

A private jetty is not necessarily equivalent to a managed marina berth. Provide the location and actual berthing arrangements, including who can inspect the yacht during absences. Keep insurance for the yacht separate from insurance for the jetty or waterfront property.

What to clarify before relying on cover

Ask whether the proposed storage location is accepted and what conditions apply. If the jetty belongs to someone else, review permission and contractual responsibilities. Do not assume the property owner's policy insures a visiting yacht or its liability.

Practical preparation

Explain access limitations and the checking arrangement when the owner is absent. A residential address alone does not describe how the yacht is secured or monitored. Keep permission to use the jetty and insurance acceptance in separate records, because each comes from a different party and answers a different question.

  • Exact berth location
  • Inspection and absence arrangements
  • Jetty ownership and permission

Worked example

An owner moves from a marina to a relative's jetty. The insurer receives the new location and arrangements before the move, and the owner separately clarifies the property owner's requirements.

Put the decision in context

A location description should explain how the yacht is kept, who has custody and who can respond to a problem. Keep permission to use a facility separate from physical suitability and insurer acceptance. Review any contract obligations instead of assuming a contractor’s insurance replaces the yacht policy. When dates, locations or inspection arrangements change, record the revised facts and obtain any required confirmation. Do not present a planned inspection as one already completed.

Prepare a clear insurance enquiry

Record the facts you can support, the evidence still missing and the precise decision you need. Keep the response beside the relevant policy document.

Frequently asked questions

Does waterfront home insurance cover my yacht at the jetty?

Do not rely on that without checking the policy. Yacht property, yacht liability and the jetty itself can involve different insured interests.

Does a marina or yard accepting my booking prove the yacht is insured there?

No. Facility permission and policy acceptance come from different parties. Check the declared location, activity, custody period and any relevant conditions with the insurer.
