WatersportsTowing liability, injury exposure, higher usage intensity

TheftOutboards specifically, which are portable and valuable

Operator age and experience

Age and experience conditions are more common on powerboats than on yachts, because operator error accounts for more of the claims. Expect a young-operator excess below a stated age, an inexperienced-operator excess regardless of age, and sometimes restrictions on who may operate the vessel at all.

Watersports liability

  • Towing skiers, wakeboarders or inflatables is a specific use to declare
  • Injury to a towed person is a liability question, not a hull one
  • An observer requirement may exist in state law and in the policy
  • Watersports equipment may be sub-limited or excluded
  • Some policies exclude towing entirely without an endorsement

Outboard theft and security

An outboard is the most stolen item in Australian recreational boating. Check whether it is insured within the hull sum insured or under a separate limit, and whether a security device is a condition of that cover.

Prepare your quote properly

Insurers price what they can verify. Work through the vessel-details checklist before you request quotes, so every quote you get is built on the same facts.

Frequently asked questions

Is watersports towing covered by powerboat insurance?

Not always by default. Towing skiers or inflatables is a specific use that may need declaring or endorsing, and the liability for injury to a towed person is treated separately from damage to the boat.

Is my outboard covered if stolen?

Usually, but frequently under a separate sub-limit and sometimes subject to a security condition. Check the limit against actual replacement cost.
