Fire prevention evidence

Engine-room fires, fuel-system faults and electrical failures produce a high proportion of motor yacht total losses. Fire aboard a vessel with substantial fuel capacity escalates quickly and frequently ends in a constructive total loss rather than a repair.

  • Fixed fire suppression in the engine space, and its service date
  • Fuel hose age and replacement history — a recurring ignition source
  • Shore-power installation, isolation and any galvanic protection
  • Battery installation, charging and increasingly lithium systems
  • Generator installation and exhaust condition

Breakdown and accidental damage

Equipment repair costs

Motor yachts carry more installed equipment than sailing vessels of the same length — stabilisers, thrusters, generators, air conditioning, complex electronics. Each is a claim pathway and each inflates a repair. Check the sum insured reflects the full installed specification, not the base boat.

Crew and operator requirements

Above a certain size, handling becomes a specific question: whether crew are employed, what experience the operator has, and how the vessel is berthed. Contact damage during berthing is among the most frequent motor yacht claims, and marina indemnities make it a liability question as well as a hull one.

Prepare your quote properly

Insurers price what they can verify. Work through the vessel-details checklist before you request quotes, so every quote you get is built on the same facts.

Frequently asked questions

Is engine failure covered by motor yacht insurance?

Mechanical breakdown through wear is generally excluded. Damage caused by a sudden accidental event may be covered. The cause, and the evidence for it, is what decides the claim.

Does a motor yacht need a survey?

Above an insurer's age or value threshold, usually yes — and for motor yachts the survey will look closely at machinery, fuel and electrical systems rather than just the hull.
