The insurance decision
A sea trial happens before the buyer necessarily owns the yacht. Establish who controls the vessel, who may operate it and which policy is expected to respond. The presence of a broker or surveyor does not answer those questions. Explain any unusual testing rather than describing everything as a normal demonstration.
What to clarify before relying on cover
Ask the seller or responsible party to confirm the insurer's position on the planned trial. Separate damage to the yacht from liability involving passengers or contractors. Record agreed limits to the trial and leave technical testing to appropriately qualified people.
Practical preparation
Agree who can instruct the skipper and who decides whether a proposed test proceeds. Keep that operational agreement separate from insurance confirmation. If the plan changes on the day, do not assume a prior answer about a short demonstration covers a materially different activity or operator arrangement.
- Named person in command
- Planned trial activities
- Seller's insurance confirmation
Worked example
A buyer expects to take the helm while a surveyor runs machinery checks. Before departure, the parties confirm the proposed operators and activities instead of assuming permission to board includes permission to command.
Put the decision in context
Keep the purchase process and the insurance process aligned without treating them as interchangeable. A survey, sale agreement and insurance offer serve different purposes. Identify who bears responsibility at each stage, which facts remain uncertain and what evidence must arrive before completion. Do not describe planned repairs as completed work. If a contract condition or ownership issue is unclear, obtain appropriate advice before committing; an insurer’s response does not rewrite the sale agreement.

Prepare a clear insurance enquiry
Record the facts you can support, the evidence still missing and the precise decision you need. Keep the response beside the relevant policy document.
Frequently asked questions
Does the prospective buyer's future policy cover a sea trial?
Only if effective cover expressly applies to that situation. Do not assume a policy intended to start at completion covers an earlier trial.
Should I wait until handover to ask about insurance?
Start early enough to obtain the records and decisions the insurer requires. Any indication remains subject to its stated assumptions; confirm effective cover for the actual handover arrangement.
