The insurance decision

A regatta programme includes more than the races. Identify travel to the venue, practice, racing, storage and the return passage. The skipper and crew may change between those stages, and a specific event extension may not answer all navigation or delivery questions.

What to clarify before relying on cover

Ask for confirmation covering each planned activity and date. Keep the notice of race and insurer response together, but do not treat an event's insurance requirement as proof your contract meets it. Include delays and alternative return arrangements in the enquiry.

Practical preparation

Create a calendar with separate entries for arrival, practice, racing, waiting and departure. Add the operator for each. This catches days outside an event extension and crew changes that an entry form may not show, while leaving the racing rules and insurance contract as separate documents to review.

  • Outward and return passage plans
  • Practice and race dates
  • Operators for every stage

Worked example

A yacht races with its regular crew but returns with a delivery skipper. The submission distinguishes the event from the return operator and itinerary.

Put the decision in context

Turn the itinerary into dated legs, with a skipper and storage arrangement for each. Navigation limits, operator acceptance, event participation and personal travel benefits are different subjects. Include realistic alternatives in the request and keep the insurer’s answer tied to the actual plan. If the plan changes, preserve the original and revised versions. Insurance confirmation does not certify a voyage as safe or replace weather, vessel, crew and regulatory preparation.

Prepare a clear insurance enquiry

Record the facts you can support, the evidence still missing and the precise decision you need. Keep the response beside the relevant policy document.

Frequently asked questions

Does regatta cover automatically include the voyage home?

Check the geographical, time and operator scope. A race-specific extension may leave delivery questions requiring separate confirmation.

Does acceptance of one itinerary cover every later change?

Check the scope and conditions of the response. A new operator, destination, activity or extended stay may require a further decision; do not reduce a specific approval to a general promise.
