The insurance decision

Leaving a yacht overseas after a cruise changes its use from active passage-making to storage. Record the exact location, afloat or ashore status, local contact and intended duration. A broad navigation area does not establish that every storage arrangement is accepted.

What to clarify before relying on cover

Ask about seasonal restrictions, inspection arrangements and any lay-up terms. Clarify what happens if your return is delayed. Keep local yard or marina contracts and contact details available so an incident can be handled even while you are elsewhere.

Practical preparation

Keep a local contact authorised for clearly defined tasks and record how the owner can be reached. If an insurer requires inspections or particular storage conditions, make sure the practical arrangement can deliver them. A written plan that nobody can carry out is not evidence that its checks occurred.

  • Exact storage site and period
  • Local contact and inspections
  • Delayed return and recommissioning plan

Worked example

An owner leaves the yacht abroad and later postpones the return trip. The insurer is given revised storage dates and checking arrangements instead of being told only about the eventual sailing departure.

Put the decision in context

Turn the itinerary into dated legs, with a skipper and storage arrangement for each. Navigation limits, operator acceptance, event participation and personal travel benefits are different subjects. Include realistic alternatives in the request and keep the insurer’s answer tied to the actual plan. If the plan changes, preserve the original and revised versions. Insurance confirmation does not certify a voyage as safe or replace weather, vessel, crew and regulatory preparation.

Prepare a clear insurance enquiry

Record the facts you can support, the evidence still missing and the precise decision you need. Keep the response beside the relevant policy document.

Frequently asked questions

Does overseas cruising approval include indefinite foreign storage?

Do not assume it. Obtain confirmation for the location, storage method and period, including any seasonal conditions.

Does acceptance of one itinerary cover every later change?

Check the scope and conditions of the response. A new operator, destination, activity or extended stay may require a further decision; do not reduce a specific approval to a general promise.
