The insurance decision

Paying an instructor changes the arrangement from an ordinary outing with friends. Describe who owns the boat, who is teaching, who is in command and who is receiving instruction. The instructor's qualifications or professional insurance do not automatically establish the yacht policy's position.

What to clarify before relying on cover

Ask the yacht insurer about the planned activity and review the instructor's contract separately. Regulatory classification can depend on the actual operation, so consult the relevant authority where needed. Keep a one-off familiarisation session distinct from ongoing paid training operations.

Practical preparation

Describe whether the instructor advises while the owner remains in command or takes command for parts of the session. Include who attends and what is paid. This gives the insurer and any relevant adviser an actual operating arrangement to assess instead of the ambiguous phrase training day.

  • Instruction scope and payment
  • Person in command
  • Insurer and relevant regulatory confirmation

Worked example

A new owner hires an instructor for several sessions with family members. The owner provides the scope and operator arrangement before assuming private leisure cover answers the instruction question.

Put the decision in context

Describe the actual arrangement rather than relying on labels such as private, volunteer or shared. Identify ownership, operation, payments and contractual promises separately. Property cover, liability, personal travel and any professional or business policy can protect different interests. If an activity raises legal or regulatory classification questions, ask the relevant authority or adviser; a general insurance article cannot decide that status from a name alone. Keep the insurer informed using consistent facts.

Prepare a clear insurance enquiry

Record the facts you can support, the evidence still missing and the precise decision you need. Keep the response beside the relevant policy document.

Frequently asked questions

Does an instructor's liability cover replace my yacht insurance?

No assumption should be made. It may protect different interests and respond to different events; check the yacht's own cover separately.

Does another person’s policy automatically fill a gap in mine?

No. Check which interest, activity and loss each policy covers. Ask about the actual arrangement rather than assuming overlapping ownership, friendship or professional involvement supplies protection.
