The insurance decision

A new ownership share does not automatically confer acceptance as a skipper under the yacht policy. Identify whether the member will operate independently, join supervised trips or only hold an investment interest. Provide experience information requested by the insurer accurately.

What to clarify before relying on cover

Coordinate the transfer and policy amendment so the intended start of use is clear. Ask whether training or other conditions apply and how completion should be evidenced. Do not let a syndicate roster serve as a substitute for insurer confirmation.

Practical preparation

Ask the syndicate administrator to confirm receipt of the insurer's decision before releasing an independent booking. Keep any training condition tied to evidence of completion. A member's confidence, sailing qualification and the insurer's acceptance are related information, but none should be substituted automatically for the others. Record the date any operator acceptance begins, especially if ownership transfers before training or familiarisation is completed.

  • Ownership and first-use dates
  • Proposed operating role
  • Experience and acceptance conditions

Worked example

A new member plans to take the yacht out immediately after settlement. The syndicate obtains the operator decision and any conditions before confirming that booking.

Put the decision in context

Describe the actual arrangement rather than relying on labels such as private, volunteer or shared. Identify ownership, operation, payments and contractual promises separately. Property cover, liability, personal travel and any professional or business policy can protect different interests. If an activity raises legal or regulatory classification questions, ask the relevant authority or adviser; a general insurance article cannot decide that status from a name alone. Keep the insurer informed using consistent facts.

Prepare a clear insurance enquiry

Record the facts you can support, the evidence still missing and the precise decision you need. Keep the response beside the relevant policy document.

Frequently asked questions

Does buying a share automatically let me skipper under the policy?

No. Ownership and permitted operation are separate questions. Check the policy and obtain any required acceptance before independent use.

Does another person’s policy automatically fill a gap in mine?

No. Check which interest, activity and loss each policy covers. Ask about the actual arrangement rather than assuming overlapping ownership, friendship or professional involvement supplies protection.
