The insurance decision
An attractive yacht can still need evidence before an insurer will offer acceptable terms. Before paying a deposit, ask what information is needed for an indication and what remains subject to inspection. Keep a preliminary indication distinct from a binding offer: incomplete facts can change the final decision.
What to clarify before relying on cover
Coordinate the insurance enquiry with the sale process. If insurability matters to the purchase, obtain appropriate advice about the contract rather than assuming an email enquiry creates a purchase condition. Identify the cost and timing of surveys before committing to an unconditional completion date.
Practical preparation
Write down the insurance questions that could change the purchase decision before requesting a premium. Examples include required inspections, permitted use before repairs and acceptance of the planned berth. A low indicative price has limited value if a condition prevents the first activity for which the yacht is being bought.
- Information still required by insurers
- Inspection availability and cost
- Contract dates and advice needed
Worked example
A buyer learns that an out-of-water inspection is required, but the nearest yard has a waiting list. The buyer addresses the timing before agreeing to a completion date that cannot accommodate the report.
Put the decision in context
Keep the purchase process and the insurance process aligned without treating them as interchangeable. A survey, sale agreement and insurance offer serve different purposes. Identify who bears responsibility at each stage, which facts remain uncertain and what evidence must arrive before completion. Do not describe planned repairs as completed work. If a contract condition or ownership issue is unclear, obtain appropriate advice before committing; an insurer’s response does not rewrite the sale agreement.

Prepare a clear insurance enquiry
Record the facts you can support, the evidence still missing and the precise decision you need. Keep the response beside the relevant policy document.
Frequently asked questions
Is an indicative premium proof I can insure the yacht?
No. Check the outstanding assumptions, acceptance conditions and effective date. An indication based on incomplete information is not confirmation of cover.
Should I wait until handover to ask about insurance?
Start early enough to obtain the records and decisions the insurer requires. Any indication remains subject to its stated assumptions; confirm effective cover for the actual handover arrangement.
