The insurance decision

A personal emergency can leave a yacht at an unplanned location with nobody available to move it. Identify immediate custody, access and inspection arrangements. Personal travel insurance and yacht insurance answer different questions, so do not assume one policy handles the whole interruption.

What to clarify before relying on cover

Ask the yacht insurer about storage and any substitute skipper. Separately check any personal travel benefits with the relevant provider. Record revised dates and authority for the local contact without granting broader repair or financial authority than intended.

Practical preparation

Separate authority to inspect, move and repair the yacht. A local helper may be willing to check it without being authorised or qualified to sail it elsewhere. Communicate the actual arrangement to the insurer and keep personal travel claims with the provider responsible for those benefits.

  • Temporary custody and access
  • Revised storage period
  • Substitute operator and separate travel policy

Worked example

An owner flies home while the boat remains in a marina. The owner confirms the temporary berth and local checking arrangement, then requests approval before appointing someone to deliver the yacht elsewhere.

Put the decision in context

Turn the itinerary into dated legs, with a skipper and storage arrangement for each. Navigation limits, operator acceptance, event participation and personal travel benefits are different subjects. Include realistic alternatives in the request and keep the insurer’s answer tied to the actual plan. If the plan changes, preserve the original and revised versions. Insurance confirmation does not certify a voyage as safe or replace weather, vessel, crew and regulatory preparation.

Prepare a clear insurance enquiry

Record the facts you can support, the evidence still missing and the precise decision you need. Keep the response beside the relevant policy document.

Frequently asked questions

Will yacht insurance pay for my flight home?

Only an applicable benefit could establish that. Check the actual wording and any separate travel policy rather than assuming interruption creates cover.

Does acceptance of one itinerary cover every later change?

Check the scope and conditions of the response. A new operator, destination, activity or extended stay may require a further decision; do not reduce a specific approval to a general promise.
