The insurance decision

Changing the delivery operator changes the proposal even when the route stays the same. Describe the actual skipper, relevant experience, crew and contractual arrangement. A professional title does not establish that every delivery will be accepted, and ownership alone does not establish acceptance to skipper it yourself.

What to clarify before relying on cover

Ask for terms based on each real option, keeping dates, boat condition and route consistent. Review the skipper's contract and insurance separately from your hull policy. Record who may authorise repairs or changes during the passage.

Practical preparation

When comparing two delivery options, keep the yacht, route and proposed dates fixed so the operator difference remains visible. Then record any conditions attached to each offer. A premium alone cannot show whether one option requires extra evidence, restricted stages or a different commencement arrangement.

  • Actual skipper and experience
  • Delivery contract and authority
  • Comparable route and vessel assumptions

Worked example

A buyer originally plans a hired delivery but later decides to sail with friends. The insurer receives the revised operator information before the original approval is relied on.

Put the decision in context

Turn the itinerary into dated legs, with a skipper and storage arrangement for each. Navigation limits, operator acceptance, event participation and personal travel benefits are different subjects. Include realistic alternatives in the request and keep the insurer’s answer tied to the actual plan. If the plan changes, preserve the original and revised versions. Insurance confirmation does not certify a voyage as safe or replace weather, vessel, crew and regulatory preparation.

Prepare a clear insurance enquiry

Record the facts you can support, the evidence still missing and the precise decision you need. Keep the response beside the relevant policy document.

Frequently asked questions

Does hiring a professional automatically reduce the premium?

No fixed outcome can be assumed. Ask for the insurer's terms for the actual operator, yacht, route and conditions.

Does acceptance of one itinerary cover every later change?

Check the scope and conditions of the response. A new operator, destination, activity or extended stay may require a further decision; do not reduce a specific approval to a general promise.
