The insurance decision

Storage charges can grow while the yacht is awaiting a claim decision or repair. Record the yard's rates, start date and reasons for delay. Distinguish unavoidable waiting from owner-requested postponement and keep the insurer informed before costs become a surprise.

What to clarify before relying on cover

Ask whether storage is eligible, what approval or limits apply and whether a practical alternative is proposed. Do not assume every day in the yard will be reimbursed. Keep invoices separate from lifting and repair charges so the cost can be assessed accurately.

Practical preparation

Maintain a running storage total and a timeline of why the boat remains in place. Send material timetable changes before the final invoice. This makes it possible to discuss alternatives while they are still practical and separates parts delays from a storage extension requested for the owner's convenience.

  • Rates and accumulated dates
  • Reason for delay
  • Approval and alternative arrangements

Worked example

Parts delays extend a hardstand stay. The owner sends the revised timetable and storage estimate to the insurer and asks about the continuing arrangement instead of waiting for the final invoice.

Put the decision in context

Keep the incident account, technical findings, cost estimates and policy decision as separate records. Each answers a different question. In an emergency, prioritise safety and appropriate assistance; document actions when safe to do so. For non-urgent expenditure, clarify the scope and authority before committing. Ask who makes the coverage decision and who manages repairs. If you disagree with an outcome, obtain the reasons and use the provider’s complaints process or appropriate advice.

Prepare a clear insurance enquiry

Record the facts you can support, the evidence still missing and the precise decision you need. Keep the response beside the relevant policy document.

Frequently asked questions

Are all storage charges covered while a claim is open?

No general rule follows from an open claim. Check eligibility, authorisation and limits against the actual circumstances.

Does submitting a repair estimate authorise the work?

Not necessarily. Check the insurer’s process and obtain the required decision. A contractor booking, assessor recommendation and insurer approval can be different steps with different responsibilities.
