Describe the actual Bali configuration
BALI's manufacturer material describes its opening living-space concept and a range of different models. Record the specific boat's configuration rather than treating all Bali catamarans as identical. Include the model, year, door and glazing arrangements, helm layout and fitted machinery. A standard brochure equipment list may differ from the delivered or subsequently modified boat.
Ask about the cause of damage to opening systems
For doors, windows, seals and operating mechanisms, separate accidental impact from wear, poor adjustment or gradual deterioration when asking about cover. Ask whether damage to the mechanism and water damage following a failure are assessed under different clauses. This is a wording exercise, not a claim that a Bali door has a particular failure rate. Service records and a surveyor's observations are more useful than speculation.
Inventory the systems supporting life aboard
Identify generators, refrigeration, air-conditioning and energy equipment actually installed. Record access requirements and supporting invoices. If living aboard, describe how long the boat will be occupied and whether anyone pays to stay. The hull value, machinery cover, personal effects and commercial-use questions should be answered separately; a high total insured value does not establish all four.
Check the berth and repair plan
Confirm a suitable marina berth and yard using the boat's actual measurements. If considering a used charter boat, collect the exit condition report and subsequent repair evidence before fixing a delivery date. Discuss how the policy treats lifting, ashore storage and transport to a repairer. Availability of a local berth is a practical arrangement, not confirmation that the insurer accepts that location.
Documents and questions to prepare
- Model-specific delivery specification and inventory.
- Opening-system inspection and maintenance records where available.
- Individual engine, generator and electrical installation documents.
- Charter or private-use history and planned future use.
- Written terms for berth, lifting and the delivery route.
Worked ownership scenario
A Bali buyer discovers that a door mechanism needs adjustment before delivery. The repairer identifies the work, and the buyer asks the insurer what cover can begin while it remains outstanding. The buyer does not describe the repair as an insured loss simply because the component is part of the boat.
Turn the guide into a written insurance brief
Record the hull identification number, build year, exact version, propulsion, equipment and any previous repairs before requesting terms. Keep the purchase price distinct from the requested insured value and explain the evidence for that value. Send each insurer the same current facts. If a survey or repair is still pending, ask what cover can begin now, what is excluded and what evidence is needed to change the terms.
Record the policy wording and unanswered questions
Use the comparison worksheet to keep each requirement beside its document reference. Leave an item unresolved until the insurer has answered it.
Frequently asked questions
Does a distinctive Bali layout mean specialist cover is automatically required?
Ask insurers about the actual boat and use. A design feature alone does not establish eligibility, a required product or a premium loading.
Can the same policy cover private use and charter?
Only rely on that if the insurer confirms the specific activity and terms. Explain the proposed operation and check any separate regulatory requirements before it begins.
Sources and scope
Manufacturer links support identification and design context. Australian insurer document libraries are starting points for checking policy wording, not evidence of acceptance of this boat or activity. The checklists and examples are editorial guidance. Use the PDS version, schedule and endorsements that apply to your own policy; this guide does not rank insurers or provide an individual insurance recommendation.
