Vessel and crew evidence for Kimberley passages

  1. The intended route, dates and how far from facilities you will be at the furthest point.
  2. Crew experience, particularly with large tidal ranges and remote passage-making.
  3. Vessel preparation: ground tackle, spares, redundancy in propulsion and power.
  4. Communications and emergency equipment, and whether they are current.
  5. Whether the vessel will be in the region during cyclone season.
  6. Whether a buddy boat or a shore contact with your plan exists.

Salvage, towing and pollution limits

  • The navigation limits themselves — remote WA cruising is frequently outside a standard area.
  • The towing and emergency assistance sub-limit, against distances measured in hundreds of miles.
  • Salvage and wreck removal, which is the number that can exceed the boat's value entirely.

Check the limits before you leave, not after

An extension requested a fortnight before departure is an ordinary transaction. The same request made after you have sailed does not exist.

Navigation limits explained

Kimberley itinerary approval questions

Describe the planned route, departure and return windows, stops, skipper experience and communications arrangements. Ask whether the navigation endorsement identifies the intended waters clearly enough. Permission to travel in an area is a different question from how towing, salvage or wreck removal would be funded after an incident.

Separate recovery planning from hull value

Ask the insurer to explain the recovery provisions with reference to a remote location on your itinerary. Establish whether a limit is within or additional to the vessel sum insured, what authorisation is required and which contact should coordinate assistance. Do not assume a metropolitan towing arrangement answers a remote recovery question.

  • Carry current insurance contacts and the passage endorsement offline.
  • Identify possible changes of route or timing in the request rather than relying on an undefined cruising area.
  • Keep the planned seasonal storage location separate from the voyage route.
  • Discuss a delay or change before the approved window ends when practicable.
