The insurance decision

An overseas purchase price and an Australian insured value are not directly comparable until the currency and valuation basis are clear. Record the currency, conversion date and evidence used. Keep taxes, transport, upgrades and complete-boat value distinct rather than adding every invoice indiscriminately.

What to clarify before relying on cover

Ask which currency the policy uses for limits, excesses and settlement. For overseas repairs, ask how a foreign estimate would be assessed and converted. Do not assume a change in exchange rates automatically changes the agreed sum or creates an insured shortfall.

Practical preparation

Label every figure with its currency, date and purpose. A purchase price, replacement estimate and insured sum can all be valid yet describe different things. Do not use a currency conversion alone to reconcile them; first establish that the valuation basis and included property are comparable.

  • Currency for each figure
  • Valuation and conversion dates
  • Settlement and excess currency

Worked example

A buyer receives a euro repair estimate after arranging an Australian-dollar policy. The owner obtains a written explanation of conversion and approval before comparing that estimate with the remaining limit.

Put the decision in context

Keep a dated document trail rather than only the newest PDF. Save the request, supporting facts, response and any replacement schedule together. When several versions exist, identify which is current and which has been superseded. A certificate, payment receipt or short email may answer only part of the question. Ask for an explanation tied to the specific policy and circumstances, and check any revised documents for unintended changes to other details.

Prepare a clear insurance enquiry

Record the facts you can support, the evidence still missing and the precise decision you need. Keep the response beside the relevant policy document.

Frequently asked questions

Will currency movement automatically increase my insured value?

Check the contract and request any needed amendment. A market exchange-rate change does not itself establish a revised insured sum.

What should a written policy clarification identify?

Include the vessel, policy reference, relevant dates, precise question and facts supplied. Keep the complete response and any required endorsement so the answer is not separated from its assumptions.
